TMJ TREATMENT

At Focus Dentistry
Welcome to Focus Dentistry, where Dr. John Sweeney specializes in advanced TMJ treatment to help you reclaim a pain-free life.

Temporomandibular joint disorders

TMJ pain and discomfort can drastically ruin your quality of life. It can affect day to day activities such as eating, talking, performance at work or school, sleep and almost any other part of daily life. In addition, in many cases, TMJ dysfunction can be progressive and slowly get worse over time leading to bite changes, changes in the jaw joints themselves, jaw posturing, tooth wear, cracked teeth, and changes to the symmetry of the face.

In 2017, Dr. Sweeney completed an 8 month training course, in which he learned how to help a vast majority of patients who suffer with TMJ dysfunction. Since then, he has successfully treated more 200 TMJ patients.

predictable and longest lasting solution

It’s our belief that in many cases of TMJ dysfunction, the source of the dysfunction can be traced back to a poor bite relationship, which creates orthopedically unstable jaw joints leading to a vast array of downhill effects. And although there can be several ways to treat TMJ dysfunction, we believe that stabilizing the jaw joints and perfecting the bite relationship is the most predictable and longest lasting solution for many but not all cases. With that in mind, Dr. Sweeney usually recommends an initial consult to determine if our protocols could work for you.

“my life has changed so much”

I finished my treatment with Dr. Sweeney in March 2019 and my life has changed so much! I sleep through the night and wake up pain free. I have lost weight and my face looks even and healthy. My teeth all touch when I bite down and I feel so confident with my new smile.

treatment protocol

Dr. Sweeney’s treatment protocol involves 2 to 3 phases of treatment

1 – Stabilization phase

This is done by using a TMJ orthotic device, which is worn full time for 3-6 months depending on severity of the case and is adjusted periodically to allow the jaw joints to naturally move back into their most stable and health position. While this is happening, we evaluate improvement of symptoms and changes in bite. Once we have determined that the jaw joints are stable and the patients’ symptoms have been resolved, we can then diagnose where the teeth fit together in this stable position.

2 – Invisalign Phase

Sometimes but not always involves aligning the teeth into a better position to support the stability of the joint and improve the outcome of the final phase.

3 – Restorative Phase

The goal of this phase is to use noninvasive or minimally invasive composite bonding to restore the proper anatomy to the teeth so that they fit together in a way to maintain the stability of the jaw and function naturally and comfortably. The icing on the cake is that when you restore stability and function, the smile naturally looks beautiful and healthy again. This is truly a life changing experience.
Please understand that TMJ treatment is a journey that can take as little as 6-9 months to finish treatment to as long as 3 years in severe cases depending on orthodontic and restorative needs. In addition, it is a big investment of money where cases can range from $20-30k for straightforward cases and exceed upwards of $75-100k for extreme cases.
